Award-winning tiger conservation on the Terai grasslands.Pilibhit Tiger Reserve lies along the India-Nepal border in the Terai belt of Uttar Pradesh, a mosaic of tall grasslands, sal forest, and the meandering Sharda and Ghaghara river systems. Once heavily pressured, Pilibhit earned global recognition after nearly doubling its tiger population, winning the first TX2 award for conservation. Its Terai landscape supports one of the finest densities of tigers in the state, along with swamp deer, leopards, and exceptional birdlife, making it a rewarding and increasingly popular destination for tiger enthusiasts in northern India.
Best Time to Visit
November to April, when the weather is cool and pleasant, the grasslands are at their best, and both wildlife activity and birdlife are excellent.
Zones
Safaris enter through the Mala and Mustafabad ranges, following tracks through tall grasslands and sal forest and along the canals and rivers that lace the Terai.
How to Reach
The nearest airports are Bareilly and Lucknow, with a railhead at Pilibhit or Bareilly. The reserve is reached by road from Bareilly in around two hours.
